Who We Are…

Leslie Kaminoff founded The Breathing Project as a non-profit educational corporation in December 2001 with the mission to promote the highest possible standards in Yoga Education and Therapeutics to the professional and general public. The senior teaching staff now includes Amy Matthews and Jill Satterfield.

Since the opening of The Breathing Project's New York City studio in March 2003, the demand for our innovative programming has been steadily increasing. Our breath-centered, individualized approach to Yoga has struck a chord with a growing community of Yoga teachers committed to extending their professional skills and knowledge.

T.K.V. DesikacharThe primary orientation of The Breathing Project's approach to yoga practice is consistent with the lineage of T.K.V. Desikachar and his father, T. Krishnamacharya. In 2003, T.K.V. Desikachar and members of his family honored The Breathing Project with a visit. Take a look through our photo gallery to see some images of this auspicious gathering.

Our view is that the primary vehicle for the transmission of teaching is the direct, unemcumbered relationship between teacher and student. One thing that makes The Breathing Project special is that all our studio policies honor that relationship by not interfering with it. For example, none of our teachers are employed by The Breathing Project - they collect their fees directly from their students, and pay rent to the studio.

The Breathing Project operates independently of any established organization, Yoga lineage or teaching system, but supports open-minded individuals from all traditions who seek continuing education and training.

Our studio's continued functioning is made possible by the involvement of our students, members and donors. We hope you'll become part of our growing community by attending a class or workshop, or by making a tax-deductible donation of any amount. The Breathing Project is a federally tax- exempt501(c)(3) educational corpration. All charitable donations are fully tax-deductible to the extent allowable by the law.
