Advanced Studies :: 300 Hour Embodied Asana Teacher Training Program

100-Hour Yoga Anatomy & ABC's | 300-Hour Embodied Asana Training |

This innovative program is geared towards teachers who have completed a 200-hour Teacher's Training course, and want to move to the 500-hour level of certification. The instructors are three of the most experienced and innovative teachers in the New York area - Amy Matthews, Jill Satterfield and Leslie Kaminoff. Here's some quotes about our teachers:

Amy"When I met with Amy Matthews, my standing-up-properly guru, I found out that, as a yoga teacher, she goes barefoot when she can...
...Then Matthews sits splay-legged in front of me, puts her hand on my ankle, and asks me to move my talus bone. Weirdly, I’m able to do this. She explains that, when we don’t use our feet properly, our muscles have to strain to compensate—not just in our feet but in our whole body. She asks me to lift the front of my foot, which I also do. She then replants my foot and asks me to 'trust my bones to hold me up.'
And I have to tell you, in that brief moment, it felt like I had never stood up properly on my own two feet before in my entire life."

—Adam Sternbergh, New York Magazine

LK“If your eyes haven’t already opened yet to experience the brilliance of Leslie Kaminoff's course offerings, then be sure to wear your sunglasses to his classes.
Whether one is a yoga practitioner, educator, or body-worker, they will surely find an illuminating exploration into the relationships between posture and breath within the context of anatomical and yogic principles. Along with sharing his vast expertise in this field, Leslie infuses his instruction with very adaptable techniques and hands-on skills, all delivered with intelligence, wisdom and humor.
I enthusiastically recommend this course as it’s a gift that will keep on giving to the others in the yoga community.”

—Anne Masovich , Yoga Teacher

Jill"Jill Satterfield realized the power of practicing asana and Buddhist Meditation together many years ago; she had been suffering from a chronic illness and, through asana and deep
concentration, was able to eventually heal herself. Since then, the New York - based teacher has developed Vajra Yoga, a practice influenced by the Vajrayana and Therevadan traditions of Buddhism. Vajra
Yoga, says Satterfield, is about seeing the
body as a vehicle for reflection."

—Tricycle Magazine

Distilling our values and principles of teaching.

Program components and hours:
The full certification program will have four parts, and homework – if all parts are completed, there will be a total of 300 contact hours. These parts can be completed over a two-year period – it is not necessary to do them at the same time as the weekend workshops.

Part 1: Weekend workshops: 9 workshops x 15 hours per workshop= 135 hours
Each of these 15 hour weekend workshops will have a particular point of focus based in anatomy and kinesiology. In each weekend there will be advanced A&K classes, asana practice, structured explorations, teaching practice and feedback.
Amy Matthews will be the lead teacher for the majority of the workshops, with guest classes from Jill Satterfield and Leslie Kaminoff.

Part 2: Complementary training: 80 hours
An additional 80 hours of training with senior Breathing Project teachers Leslie Kaminoff and Jill Satterfield is required. Classes can be taken in Leslie’s Advanced Studies course at the Breathing Project, or in Jill’s Vajra Yoga workshops. (Graduates of Leslie or Jill’s program will receive credit towards a portion of these hours.)

Part 3: Assisting in asana class: 55 hours
Assisting Amy, Jill and/or Leslie in asana classes will be an opportunity to observe different teaching choices and to witness the effects of those choices in class.

Part 4: Spectrum classes (variety of styles and teachers): 30 hours
With the goal of understanding the value of a variety of approaches to teaching yoga, an additional 30 hours of asana class are required. These classes should be in at least 10 different approaches – possible choices include: Anusara, Astanga, Bikram, Dharma Mittra, Integral, Iyengar, Jivamukti, Kundalini, Sivananda, Viniyoga, Yin Yoga.
(The cost of these classes is not included in the program fees.)

Homework – two parts:
Book discussion: The final part of each month’s workshop will be a discussion of a book from the reading list. Three or four students will lead the discussion of the book, and its relationship to yoga.

Spectrum class reviews: After attending the ‘spectrum classes’, program participants will be asked to write a review of the classes, focusing on the strengths of each style or tradition, and how each supports an embodied experience of asana.
