Advanced Studies: Anatomy Courses
Yoga Anatomy: Principles and Practice
with Leslie Kaminoff
Wednesdays 2:00 - 4:00pm or 6:30 - 8:30pm
Now enrolling for Spring Trimester! Yoga Anatomy: Practices
This new offering from Leslie Kaminoff is the companion to his Yoga Anatomy: Principles course. Each lesson will present a one-hour practice session that is themed to a corresponding Yoga Anatomy: Principles lecture. The second hour of each session will be spent in reviewing the methodology behind the sequence, the reasoning behind the teaching choices, and suggesting adaptations and modifications for achieving specific effects. Additionally, selected lessons will be led by special guest teachers who will give course participants a chance to experience a wide variety of the perspectives and techniques utilized by some of the leading yoga educators in the country.
Yoga Anatomy: Principles and Practice provides a practical grounding in the essentials of the anatomy of yoga practice with a particular emphasis on the relationship between breathing and healthy spinal function.
Each trimester covers the material from a different perspective: The fall session focuses on the anatomy and pressure mechanics of breathing, the three diaphragms and the thoracic and abdominal muscles. The winter session covers the evolution and anatomy of spinal mechanics, the development of postural support and articular freedom. The spring session deals with the articular anatomy of the limbs, pelvic and shoulder girdles and explores issues surrounding locomotion and arm support.
In alternate years we will use different approaches to exploring the material. The first year will be a discussion of the principles of yoga anatomy through a combination of lecture and demonstration. The second year will be guided group practice, followed by an analysis of the teaching methodology.
Any level of ability is welcome, and no previous yoga experience is necessary. Each trimester can be taken separately, and the course can be started at the beginning of any trimester. There are no prerequisites for this course.
